Most magicians have heard about the importance of suggestion in
effects. There is much great work by Kenton Knepper and Luke Jermay,
to name but 2 magicians who excel in this field.
NLP offers a great way to learn about using hypnotic language and
suggestion. The language patterns involved in the Milton Model are
very ambiguous language structures that put people into a very 'trance-like'
state. NLP offers over 20 different structures for using language
hypnotically, all of which can have a useful place in the magician's
toolkit.
For example, the double-bind is where you give someone the illusion
of having a choice, however in reality they produce the response
you want. This can be useful in many different situations, even
in asking for volunteers - for example rather than saying 'would
you help me out with this effect please...' a double bind would
work along the lines of saying 'Would you like to sit here or over
there to help me with the next effect'. This presupposes that the
person is going to help you, you simply offer them a choice over
where to sit - this takes the pressure off the volunteer as well,
because they don't have to consider whether or not to help you.
Appropriately places suggestions in your performance can have great
effects in the audience. Over time this site will explore other
ways this can be used by the performer.
